The punishment for insurance fraud in the UK is severe, yet false claims are a growing issue that continues to impact our country.

According to the ABI (Association of British Insurers), fraudulent claims across the UK rose by 16% in 2023. This led to the creation of a new Insurance Fraud Charter, which aims to identify loopholes in the market and improve collaboration between insurers and the Criminal Justice System.

Making false claims on a jewellery insurance policy, in particular, can be tempting to potential fraudsters. High-value jewellery is among the most common items that feature in a false insurance claim.

The City of London Police Department even reported that opportunistic insurance fraud has risen as much as 61% in recent years, including false claims from people trying to claim twice for lost or stolen jewellery.

However, due to insurance companies' diligence, an insurance scam is detected every five minutes in the UK, which equates to around 300 per day.

Before we look at the punishment for insurance fraud, let's first cover what insurance fraud is.

What is insurance fraud?

Insurance fraud is intentionally deceiving an insurance company for your financial benefit. This usually occurs during the application or claims process when someone applying for insurance or making a claim deliberately provides misleading information to gain a payment or discount they are not eligible for. Examples of insurance fraud

In Milton Keynes, 28-year-old Daniel Silver falsely claimed for a £6,150 Rolex watch, stating he’d lost it in a sunbed shop. But the insurer caught him out using intelligence they’d gathered from an investigation, and he was given a 12-month community order of 200 hours of unpaid work.

As you can see, the UK's punishment for false insurance claims is severe and not worth the risk.

To eradicate the threat of fraud, most insurers take a strict zero-tolerance approach when they catch someone out. Cases are more regularly reported to the police for investigation, who have also started to adopt a tougher attitude towards insurance fraud.

If prosecuted under the Fraud Act 2006 (and depending on the severity of the crime), fraudsters may face:

up to 10 years’ imprisonment
fines or having their assets seized
a criminal record
being unable to buy insurance or other essential financial services

In addition, insurers are urging people to help reduce crime rates by reporting fraudsters and supplying information on suspected insurance fraud.

How to report insurance fraud

If you believe someone is committing insurance fraud, you can report it through the Insurance Fraud Bureau (IFB) or Action Fraud websites. Alternatively, if you would like to speak to someone directly, you can call them on 0800 4220421 and 0300 1232040, respectively.

If you wish, any information you provide can be kept anonymous. The IFB or Action Fraud can then share your report with insurers or the police for further investigation.

How are watches valued?

The main factors that influence a watch’s value are:

Model

Certain timepieces are more sought after than others. This demand can be based on a watch’s scarcity, prestige or aesthetic beauty. Demand drives value, so any given model’s value fluctuates accordingly. That’s why it’s so important to check your watch’s value regularly. As a general rule, the older a watch becomes, the more valuable it is.

Condition

Obvious it may sound, but a watch that’s damaged, broken or scratched will be worth far less than the same watch in mint condition. If your watch is an investment or family heirloom, it’s important to take good care of it in order to retain or even increase its value.

Rarity

Several factors can determine a watch's rarity. This is based on a combination of age, scarcity and condition. Initially, a watch may have only been manufactured in limited numbers which, providing demand outweighs supply, will drive its value up.

If the watch is also quite old, there’ll probably be fewer of them available (and potentially even fewer still left in good condition!)

Whilst, this isn’t a high enough sum to make it officially the most expensive engagement ring ever purchased, when you adjust this figure for inflation, it works out at exactly $39,844,658.21 at the time of writing. This is almost £30 million! Then again, this is a ring for a princess we’re talking about.

It was master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock who introduced Grace Kelly to Cartier, after which the actress became a lifelong fan of the jeweller. There is even a whole room in Cartier's New York City mansion dedicated to Kelly.

Did you know?

The 10.47 diamond wasn't actually Kelly's first engagement ring. The Prince of Monaco proposed with an eternity band set with rubies and diamonds, also designed by Cartier. It was during the filming of High Society that the Prince purchased the more famous ring Kelly is known for wearing today.

6. Paris Hilton

Socialite and hotel heiress Paris Hilton has received a total of four engagement rings to date. She is currently engaged to venture capitalist Carter Reum, but the ring he gave her isn't the one we're focusing on here.

Let’s go back to 2005 when Hilton dated Paris Latsis (no, your eyes do not deceive you – he is also named Paris). Burton purchased the diamond at an auction for $307,000 (around £1.7 million in today’s money). It was made into a ring in 1968, shortly after he presented it to Taylor.

It has long been known as the Elizabeth Taylor diamond and was said to have been the legendary actress’ favourite piece. The stone sold for an enormous sum of $8.8 million (£6.62 million) in 2011 during her estate's auction after her death. Accounting for inflation, the Krupp diamond value is now estimated at $9.25 million (around £6.66 million).
