Ripe offers specialist roof tent insurance designed to help financially protect the roof tent at home and on the road. Cover can include theft, accidental or malicious damage, storm and fire damage, new-for-old replacement and up to £5 million Public Liability. You can also add optional European Cover if travelling abroad.
Supported by a UK-based customer service team, Ripe was named Best British Insurance Company at the 2024 Smart Money People Insurance Choice Awards and is rated ‘Excellent’ on Trustpilot.
A standard car insurance policy may not cover damage to or theft of an attached roof tent.
Every roof tent policy includes up to £5 million Public Liability cover, if using the roof tent causes accidental injury to another person or damage to their property.
If a roof tent aged up to 15 years is stolen or damaged beyond repair, new-for-old cover can help pay for an equivalent new replacement.
Specialist cover is available for popular roof tent manufacturers from TentBox, Thule and RoofBunk.
A roof tent makes it easier to turn road trips, weekends away and outdoor events into overnight adventures. Their popularity is growing, with the UK rooftop-tent market valued at £12.2 million in 2025 and forecast to grow by 11.2% annually between 2026 and 2034.
As more people invest in roof tents, specialist insurance may be worth considering. Specialist roof tent insurance by Ripe includes hard-shell and soft-shell models from brands such as TentBox, Thule and RoofBunk against insured risks, including theft, accidental damage and severe weather while attached to a vehicle, used at a campsite or stored between trips.

Roof tents fall under the touring caravan limits in the Important Documents. Please check the policy wording for full details of the cover, limits, exclusions and conditions.
A Ripe policy covers a wide range of roof tent types, including:
Hard-shell models open from a rigid outer case and often remain attached to the vehicle throughout the camping season.
Soft-shell tents fold into a fabric-covered unit for travel and are usually open to create a larger sleeping area.
Pop-up and wedge designs use hinges, gas struts or assisted opening systems.
Some models include a removable annex or awning extending from the tent.
A roof tent is fitted directly to a vehicle and differs from a folding camper, which is towed behind the vehicle and unfolds into a larger camping space.
Not necessarily. Motor policies may limit or exclude cover for vehicle accessories. Check if the roof tent is covered for its full value while fitted, in use and stored.
Yes, the motor insurer should be told before fitting a roof tent, roof bars or roof rack. This equipment may be treated as an accessory or modification, which could affect the vehicle’s cover. Taking out separate roof tent insurance does not replace the need for suitable motor insurance.
Roof tent insurance by Ripe does not include contents cover. Items such as sleeping bags, clothing, camping equipment, and electrical devices may need a separate contents policy.
A roof tent policy can cover hard-shell and soft-shell roof tents from brands such as TentBox, Thule, RoofBunk, iKamper, Dometic and Wild Land. Cover depends on the roof tent’s age, condition and value.
When it is not attached to the vehicle, the roof tent should be kept at the declared storage location and secured in line with the policy requirements. Required locks or other security measures must be used, as failing to meet these conditions will affect a theft claim. Check the policy wording for the full storage and security requirements.
