FAQ Do you need specific insurance for a converted campervan?

Motorhome and campervan insurance through Ripe covers professionally and DIY converted campervans and motorhomes, offering the same benefits of our standard policy, but it's tailored to cover your campervan conversion.

The only difference is that for a conversion, the DVLA has certain requirements your vehicle has to meet for it to be classed as a Motor Caravan. If the conversion doesn’t meet these requirements, it wouldn’t be classed as a Motor Caravan, and we wouldn’t be able to insure it.

What are the requirements for a converted vehicle to be classed as a campervan to be insured?

At least one permanently fixed bed within the accommodation of at least 6 feet (includes permanently fixed seats that can be folded down to make a bed)

  • The accommodation must contain fixed storage facilities, like wardrobes or cupboards

  • Fixed gas or electric-powered cooking or heating installations. (Any cooking or heating facilities must have been professionally installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines)

  • A permanently secured seating and dining area

  • A permanently fixed water storage tank or container

  • A separate door for access to the living accommodation

  • At least one window on each side of the accommodation of the vehicle

  • No bulkhead between the front seats of the vehicle and the accommodation.

Converted Campervan Insurance FAQs
  • The cost of your motorhome and campervan insurance can vary depending on various factors, such as:

    • the monetary value and age of your vehicle

    • your no claims bonus

    • where you live

    • your annual mileage

    • whether you have any additional drivers on your policy

    • what security measures you have in place

    • personal circumstances such as your driving experience and age

The quickest way to check how much your motorhome or campervan insurance could cost through Ripe is to get a free online quote.

  • Motorhome or campervan insurance is a legal requirement if you drive your vehicle on public roads. If you keep your vehicle off the road permanently, then you can apply to the government for the insurance to be waived. However, you will still need to purchase insurance in the future if you take your motorhome or campervan onto public roads.

  • Setting up a campervan conversion insurance policy through Ripe is quick to do. If you want to speed up the process of getting a campervan insurance quote, make sure that you have the following details to hand:

    Driving licence

Information on what type of licence you have and how long you’ve had it

    Contact details

Your name, age and address. You will also need the details of any other named drivers you want on your policy

    Claims history

Have you or other named drivers made any previous insurance claims?

    Your campervan

You will need to know the age, model and make of your campervan. Also the estimated mileage, what fuel it uses, where it’s kept and its current value.

  • As long as a vehicle meets the requirements to be considered a campervan or motorhome, we’ll cover most modifications.

  • You will only have to declare modifications that aren’t directly related to the conversion, such as modifications that impact engine performance, transmission or braking systems. For example, a cooker or wardrobe that had been added would be part of the conversion, so wouldn’t need to be declared. There is no need to declare cosmetic modifications.
