Tips for keeping your jewellery safe

Alongside following the specific conditions of your jewellery insurance, there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your precious items stay safe:

  • Store items securely—use a lockable, fireproof safe at home to protect your jewellery from theft or damage.

  • Use home security systems—invest in high-quality security systems with cameras, alarms, and motion sensors for added protection.

  • Remove jewellery in risky situations—avoid wearing high-value items in high-risk environments, such as while exercising, travelling, or working, and keep them in a locked safe instead.

  • Keep records of your jewellery—document detailed descriptions and photographs of your jewellery for easy reference when filing a claim on your jewellery insurance.

  • Regularly update your jewellery insurance—ensure your policy reflects the current value of your collection through professional appraisals and that any valuation is in line with your insurance conditions.

  • Avoid posting items on social media—sharing images of high-value jewellery can inadvertently attract thieves and put your items at risk.

Jewellery Insurance FAQs
  • Standard house insurance policies won’t usually cover loss of your jewellery away from the home, or any single item over £1k-£2k, without an add-on at an additional cost.

Standalone jewellery insurance covers theft, loss, and damage both at and away from home.

Policies by Ripe also include Worldwide cover as standard, meaning the insurer will repair or replace your items up to £20k per item, with a total combined value of £30k if you’re insuring more than one item, even if the incident occurs abroad.

  • Standard travel insurance policies generally cover your jewellery, provided none of your items exceed the single-item limit (which can be as low as £200-£300). That’s why, if you have high-value jewellery, you may want to consider getting standalone jewellery insurance to help financially protect your high-value items.

Please note: Jewellery insurance should not be treated as a replacement for travel insurance.

  • Jewellery isn’t always just valuable, it’s often sentimental, too. Whether it’s your engagement ring, a family heirloom, or a special gift, losing or damaging it can be heartbreaking.

Specialist jewellery insurance can help protect your treasured pieces against theft, loss, or damage, giving you peace of mind wherever you go. If you want the reassurance that your jewellery is covered at home, away, and even worldwide, you might want to consider insurance.

  • The cost of your jewellery insurance policy depends on a few factors, such as:

    • your age

    • your location

    • the value of your jewellery

  • Yes, you can take out jewellery insurance for a single item valued between £1k and £20k through Ripe. The policy helps provide protection against accidental damage, theft, and loss, both at home and abroad, with worldwide cover included as standard.

  • It depends on your insurance provider, but typically every two to five years. At Ripe, we deem a jewellery valuation valid if it was completed within the last 3 years by a NAJ-registered valuer.
