FAQ Do I need VW campervan insurance?

If you drive or park your Volkswagen camper on public roads in the UK, having at least third-party cover is a legal requirement. This works in much the same way as standard car insurance.

If you keep your camper off the road, you do not legally need insurance, but you must register a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) through the DVLA. VW camper insurance can still provide financial protection if the vehicle is damaged or stolen while stored off the road.

Day van or campervan?

A day van and a campervan can look almost the same on the driveway, but the DVLA classes them differently, and that can affect the type of insurance policy that applies.

  • Day van

    • Used mainly for everyday driving, with leisure features that are often removable

    • Usually still recorded with the DVLA as a van or panel van

    • May not meet the DVLA criteria to be reclassified as a motor caravan

    • Typically covered by van or day van insurance rather than campervan insurance

  • Campervan

    • Has permanent living features fitted, such as seating, sleeping, cooking and storage

    • Recorded with the DVLA as a motor caravan

    • Meets the DVLA requirements for a converted campervan

    • Can be covered by specialist VW campervan insurance through Ripe

! Please note: VW campervan insurance through Ripe requires the vehicle to be registered as a campervan with the DVLA and to meet the DVLA requirements for conversion. If a vehicle is not registered as a campervan, a different type of cover may apply. The DVLA sets the criteria for recording a vehicle as a motor caravan, and these criteria can change over time.

VW Campervan Insurance FAQs
  • Some very small campers can sit on a car policy, but most insurers require specialist campervan insurance for a VW camper, particularly conversions and factory campers such as the California. Specialist cover is built around living in use, fitted equipment and touring, which standard car insurance does not include.

  • Most VW campers, including the T5, T6, California and Transporter conversions, sit under 3,500kg and can be driven on a standard category B car licence. Heavier Grand California and Crafter builds can approach that limit. The licence you need depends on the weight of the vehicle and when you passed your driving test.

  • Yes. Ripe can arrange cover for professional and DIY Volkswagen camper conversions, provided the vehicle is registered as a campervan with the DVLA and meets its requirements for conversion.

  • Cover through Ripe includes Third Party Only cover in Europe as standard up to 90 days per trip or 180 across the year. Comprehensive EU cover can be added such as European breakdown cover as optional extras when taking out a policy.

  • Yes. Your VW campervan can be covered while it is in storage over winter, as long as the storage location is listed and noted on your statement of insurance.

  • Your premium depends on the model, age and value of your VW camper, where it is kept, the security fitted, and your own driving details and use. Because a factory California and a self built Transporter are different vehicles, prices vary, and you can see an accurate price by building a quote online.

  • Getting a quote online takes a few minutes. It helps to have these details ready:

    • The vehicle's registration, or its make, model and year

    • The current value of your camper

    • Where it is kept overnight

    • Your estimated annual mileage

    • Any no claims history, and details of anyone who will drive it

  • Cover may be available for Volkswagen campers up to 40 years old, depending on the vehicle's value, condition and individual risk details. Ripe may arrange cover for policyholders aged between 25 and 80.
