Insurance for public libraries

Public library insurance through Ripe can help financially protect your community or public space against the risks it could face on a day-to-day basis.

Whether it’s cover for damage to your stock, or financial protection should a member of the public make a claim against you for an injury sustained on your premises, having public library insurance in place allows you to spend more time running your organisation and less time worrying about being left out of pocket should things go wrong.

FAQDo community libraries need Public Liability insurance?

Though Public Liability insurance is not a legal requirement for libraries, having it in place can help to protect you financially should a member of the public make a claim against you.

The only mandatory insurance when setting up a library is Employers’ Liability cover, if you employ staff. This can either be taken out on its own through Ripe or selected alongside other cover.

Library insurance FAQs
  • Business interruption insurance can help cover your library should you have to close due to specific insured events that cause damage to your property, such as flooding or fire damage, where these are covered under your policy. Business interruption insurance could help cover any lost revenue or ongoing expenses, such as staff wages or rent, while your library is closed.

  • Yes, where contents and stock cover is chosen, your library books and other similar stock (such as DVDs) could be financially protected should it be stolen or accidentally damaged.

  • Through Ripe, any of the following will be insured under the policy where the relevant cover is selected:

    • Directors or Partners

    • Committee member or officer

    • Employees

With Public Liability cover, you can also get cover for hiring out your library for community social or fundraising events

Please note that damage caused by weather is not covered for playing surfaces in this policy.

  • The cost of your library insurance will depend on several factors, such as the size and location of your library and the level of cover you choose.
