Do gyms need Public Liability insurance?

Though not a legal requirement, Public Liability insurance can help to protect you financially should a member of the public make a claim against you for injury or property damage.

Gyms and studios could be deemed liable for accidents and injuries that occur on their premises. However, Public Liability insurance can help provide financial protection in the event of a claim arising from accidents, such as:

  • a gym member tripping over stray equipment and getting injured on your premises

  • a studio visitor slipping on a wet floor and banging their head

  • one of your staff members damaging someone else’s personal property during a class

If your gym or studio employs staff in the UK, Employers’ Liability insurance is a legal requirement. Employers’ Liability cover can either be taken out on its own through Ripe or selected alongside other cover.

Gym insurance FAQs
  • Business interruption insurance is designed to help cover your gym or studio business should you have to shut your club down due to specific insured events that cause damage to your property. This could include flooding or fire damage to your facilities.

Events such as these could lead to a significant drop in your business income, but business interruption insurance could help cover lost revenue or ongoing expenses, such as staff wages or rent, while your club is unable to operate.

  • Yes, where this cover is chosen through Ripe, your gym and studio equipment would be financially protected should it be stolen or accidentally damaged.
