Mobile / Freelancer / Rent a Chair FAQs

Public and product liability cover is designed to protect you from any third-party claims for injury or property damage arising from the running of your business.
Let’s say you spill some hair dye on your client’s expensive belongings, and they make a claim against you, public liability cover would protect you financially.
Or, let’s say you sell your client some hair product which later gives them an allergic reaction—that’s where product liability cover would help.
With Ripe, up to £1.25m of public liability cover is included as standard, but you can increase this up to £10m should you wish.

If you are teaching within a college or a teaching facility, while it’s not compulsory, you may want to consider teaching cover to protect yourself against potential negligence claims.
For example, let’s say one of your students fails to qualify and subsequently sues you for retraining costs. Teaching cover could provide financial protection so that the damage and disruption to your business and reputation are kept to a minimum.

As our Mobile/Freelance/Rent a chair policies are for you alone, we do not offer Employers' Liability.

This is a form of financial protection that covers you as a qualified individual against the unexpected. You can customise your policy to include different levels of protection, such as cover for theft or damage to your equipment, or your liability to customers.

What's covered?
Public and Product Liability
Up to £10m of cover is included as standard to protect you against third-party claims for injury or property damage.
Treatment Risk Cover
Protects your liability against third-party claims for injury or property damage following Hair and beauty treatments up to the value of £3m.
What's not covered?
Working Abroad
We can only cover policyholders working in the UK and cannot cover claims brought in from another country.
Treatments Involving The Use Of Injections
We will not cover any treatment involving the use of injections, alongside a list of specifically excluded treatments.
Theft From Unattended And Unlocked Vehicles
We cannot cover theft from unattended vehicles unless all points of access are locked, or the vehicle is stolen at the same time.
Exclusions To Equipment and Stock Cover
Excludes wear and tear, manufacturing faults, vermin, or inherent defects.
Exclusions To Money Cover
Excludes theft if not reported to the police within 7 days and theft from an unattended vehicle.
What's optional?
Equipment And Stock Cover
You can cover your Equipment and stock, up to a combined value of £10,000.
Money Cover
You can cover the theft of money from your residence or in transit up to the value of £500.
Legal Cover
You can select up to £100k of cover for costs incurred from defending or pursuing a claim for a range of legal issues. There must be a 51% chance of winning the case or achieving a positive outcome for us to cover legal costs.
Teaching Cover
Provides cover for compensation sought following a negligent act in respect of providing teaching services where you have received a fee.

Barber
• Washing, styling, cutting and drying of hair, including the use of cutthroat razors and hair clippers and trimmers.
Hairdresser
• Washing, styling, cutting, and drying of hair
• Tinting, dyeing, bleaching or permanent waving of hair
• Eyebrow treatments including plucking, shaping, tinting, threading, waxing, HD Brows, henna and lamination (see patch testing requirement)
• Eyelash treatments including tinting, lifting, perming and applying false eyelashes including semi-permanent eyelash extensions (see patch testing requirement)
• Cutting and shaping of nails including application of acrylic coatings
• Ear piercing by gun and stud method
• Use of electrical Equipment such as tongs, curlers or straighteners
• Use of cutthroat razors, hair clippers and trimmers.
Nail Technician
• Application of nail extensions and nail coatings including varnishes and coatings cured using a UV or LED lamp, provided that You have
• Checked the client is not allergic to acrylics or plastics prior to application;
• Application of nail art;
• Cutting shaping or nails; and
• Manicures and pedicures including paraffin wax.
Beauty Therapist/Beautician

Let’s say one of your salon employees slips on a wet floor and makes a claim against you, or the business premises is damaged in a fire—having the correct salon insurance could save you.

Injury To The Public Whilst Teaching In A Teaching Facility
Our teaching cover does not include this, as students must have their own insurance to protect their liability.
Closure Due To Disease
We cannot cover business interruption due to disease outbreaks classified as pandemics by the World Health Organisation.
Theft From Unattended And Unlocked Vehicles
We cannot cover theft from unattended vehicles unless all points of access are locked, or the vehicle is stolen at the same time.
Legal Costs For Taking Someone To Court
There must be a 51% chance of winning the case or achieving a positive outcome for us to cover legal costs.
Exclusions To Buildings, Shop Front, And Contents Cover
Excludes wear and tear, manufacturing faults, vermin, or inherent defects, alongside theft and escape of water if the salon has not been occupied for 30 consecutive days.
Exclusions To Money Cover
Excludes theft from employees if not reported to the police within 7 days and theft from an unattended vehicle.
What's optional?
Contents, Stock, And Shop Front Cover
You can cover your contents, stock, shop front, fixtures, and fittings up to a combined value of £250k.
Employers’ Liability
This cover protects your liability following illness or injury to an employee up to the value of £10m.
Buildings Cover
We provide up to £500k of cover for your salon’s building, including any outbuildings, walls, gates, and fences.
Teaching Cover
Provides cover for compensation sought following a negligent act in respect of providing teaching services where you have received a fee.
Money Cover
You can cover the theft of money from your business up to the value of £2,500.
Business Interruption
Covers loss of turnover or the additional costs of keeping your business running up to the value of £500k if you cannot trade.
Legal Cover
You can select up to £100k of cover for costs incurred from defending or pursuing a claim for a range of legal issues.

Yes. In most cases, it is a legal requirement to have valid Employers’ Liability insurance. This can be included as an extra when customising your policy with Ripe.

If a trainee who is working within your salon was to injure a model, this would be insured under your public liability cover.
If a student who you are training within a college or training facility was to injure a model, this would not be insured under your policy and so the student would be required to have their own public liability cover for this.
