Insurance for self-employed, freelance and spa-based therapists?

If you are employed or self-employed in a spa, salon, or clinic, you may still need your own massage therapist insurance to cover your individual treatments and professional responsibilities.

If you work on a mobile basis, travelling to clients’ homes or workplaces, massage therapy insurance can also take into account the additional exposures that come with working in different locations. Transporting portable equipment, setting up in unfamiliar surroundings and working outside of a fixed premises can all present unique considerations.

For freelance therapists renting a room, sharing space within a salon, or working independently, massage insurance can provide protection that follows you. This allows your cover to align with the flexible nature of freelance work, rather than being limited to one location.

FAQDo you employ other therapists or staff?

If you employ anyone as part of your massage therapy business, whether that’s another therapist, an apprentice, or administrative support, you may be legally required to have employers’ liability insurance in place. Under UK law, most businesses that employ staff must hold this cover to help protect against claims if an employee suffers an injury or illness as a result of their work.

Even if you only employ someone on a part-time, temporary or casual basis, the requirement can still apply. Employers’ liability insurance is designed to help cover legal costs and compensation claims arising from workplace incidents involving employees.
