Is caravan insurance a legal requirement?

Caravan insurance is not a legal requirement. However, caravan insurance can help provide financial protection against risks associated with owning one, such as theft or damage.

One of the most obvious risks, caravan theft, is on the rise. Our research shows that more than 1,600 caravans have been reported stolen in the UK over the last three years.

If you’re a static caravan owner, many holiday parks will require caravan insurance as a prerequisite for siting your caravan on their premises, so this could be worth considering.

FAQThe biggest caravan risks, according to our claims data

Ripe analysed over 800 caravan claims and claim notifications reported between January 2025 and July 2026 to find out.

  • Summer brings the most claims - but winter costs the most. Claims peak in the warmer months when caravans are on the move yet claims made in winter carry the highest average cost.

  • Accidental damage made up around 4 in 5 claims. Accidental damage can occur when a caravan is manoeuvring into a pitch, parked at home, or used by friends or family

  • Touring caravans make up 68% of all claims, ahead of static caravans (15%) and lodges and cabins (9%)

  • Theft is rare but expensive. It accounts for just 4% of claims but is the costliest claim type on average. To help deter thieves, use both a hitch lock and a wheel clamp and install an alarm and tracking device.

Who is specialist caravan insurance through Ripe for?

Cover is available whether you are a weekend warrior, seasonal pitcher or a family holiday maker.

Types of caravan owners covered can include:

  • Weekend tourers – taking regular short breaks to campsites, holiday parks and touring locations throughout the UK.

  • Seasonal pitch owners – keeping a caravan on the same pitch for extended periods whilst enjoying frequent visits during the holiday season.

  • Family holidaymakers – using a caravan for family holidays, school breaks and long weekends away.

  • Retired caravan owners – making the most of the flexibility to travel throughout the year at their own pace.

  • Touring enthusiasts – travelling to different destinations across the UK and, where selected, Europe as part of longer caravan holidays.

  • Holiday homeowners – owning a static caravan, lodge, chalet or cabin used for regular leisure breaks.

Do I need specialist caravan insurance?

Caravan insurance can help provide financial protection in a range of situations, from travelling between destinations to storing a caravan between holidays.

Some common scenarios include:

  • A holiday park asks for proof of Public Liability insurance before allowing a caravan to be sited

  • A caravan is accidentally damaged whilst being towed to a campsite or holiday destination, where accidental damage cover may help provide financial protection

  • Stormy weather causes damage whilst a caravan is on a campsite or seasonal pitch, where storm damage cover may help provide financial protection, subject to the policy terms and conditions

  • Items are stolen from inside a caravan during a holiday or whilst in storage, where contents cover may help provide financial protection

  • A neighbouring caravan or third-party property is accidentally damaged whilst manoeuvring onto a pitch, where Public Liability cover may help provide financial protection against eligible claims.

“Not only can caravan insurance protect your own caravan from theft and accidental or malicious damage, but having third-party cover in place can also help provide financial protection should you cause injury to a third party or damage their property through the use of your caravan.”

  • If your holiday home or caravan is damaged beyond repair or stolen, you will be reimbursed for the value it would cost to replace it with a new, equivalent model (if one is available in the United Kingdom).

New-for-old caravan insurance through Ripe requires your static caravan, lodge, cabin, or chalet to be less than 10 years old to benefit from this cover. For touring caravans, new-for-old cover only applies if it was purchased brand new and is less than 15 years old.

  • Yes. As long as you have three years’ no claims discount, you can protect this by selecting the ‘protect your no claims discount’ option either when getting a caravan insurance quote or at renewal. Please note that if you have two claims within a three-year period, your no-claims discount will no longer be protected following the second claim. This means that a third claim in three years would affect your no-claims discount.

Protecting your no-claims discount does not guarantee the cost of your renewal premium; however, you will be able to benefit from the no-claims discount when you next renew your policy with us. Please see the Policy Wording for full details.

  • If your holiday home or caravan is damaged beyond repair or stolen, you will be reimbursed for the market value at the time of the loss.

  • Unfortunately not. We can only insure permanent UK residents.

  • We’ll ask about your claims history when you get a quote with us. Whether we can offer you a policy will depend on the number of claims you’ve had, the claim value and the circumstances.

  • If you need to make a claim, please contact our claims department as soon as possible by calling 0344 274 0272 or by email. Please see our making a claim page for further information.
