What does fitness instructor insurance cover?

Public Liability cover against injury or property damage:

Even if you take your clients’ safety seriously and are precise with your instructions, accidents can still happen. That’s why Public Liability is an essential form of insurance for many fitness instructors.

It doesn’t matter whether you run group or private sessions, or whether you teach outside or in a gym, someone injuring themselves or damaging property in your session is a risk which could end up leaving you out of pocket. For instance, a client could trip over a weight you left on the floor, or you or a client could accidentally damage equipment in the gym you’re working in.

Insure4Sport’s Public Liability protects your legal accountability if a claim is made against you for the above reasons. As explained above, most gyms and sports centres will require proof of Public Liability, so it’s essential if you want to use their facilities.

  • Our Public Liability cover starts at £1 million.
  • You’ll also get £1 million of FREE Professional Indemnity cover when you take out our Public Liability cover, protecting you against claims that arise from the advice you’ve given to clients.

Cover for equipment repairs and replacements:

We understand that as a fitness instructor, you’ll use a range of equipment to give your clients a fun and challenging session. Although you’ll be careful with it, taking it back and forth to different locations, as well as allowing beginners to use it for the first time, can make accidents quite common.

Whether it’s your dumbbells, scales or speakers, if your equipment is lost, damaged or stolen, you might be unable to work.

Our Equipment cover, with a maximum of £2,500 per single item, ensures your sports equipment can be repaired or replaced with as little disruption as possible, meaning you’ll be back motivating your clients in no time.

  • Fitness instructors can cover their equipment against theft, loss, and damage.
  • If an item is under one year old – and was bought new – we’ll replace it new-for-old.

Personal Accident cover if you require treatment:

Accidents can happen to even the most experienced fitness instructors. If you sustain an injury and require physio or even surgery, it can be expensive, so it makes sense to protect yourself.

That’s why we provide up to £50,000 of Personal Accident cover, to ensure the financial impact of any injuries is kept to a minimum by compensating you for serious injuries or certain treatments you need.

Loss of Earnings cover if you’re unable to work:

It can be scary to think an injury sustained whilst training others might prevent you from working for a while, putting your income on hold and your bank account in the red..

We offer optional Loss of Earnings cover of up to £750 per week when you take out Personal Accident cover because we understand it’s important you are financially supported while you’re on the mend.

Employers’ Liability if you employ staff:

If you employ staff as part of your fitness instructing business, you’re legally required to take out Employers’ Liability insurance. If any of your employees were to suffer an injury whilst at work and hold you responsible, you could be on the receiving end of an expensive compensation claim. Employers’ Liability enables you to meet the costs of a claim due to employee’s injuries, whether they occur on or off-site.

Worldwide cover:

Perhaps you fancy a change of scenery? If you want to teach fitness sessions abroad, you need to stay protected with our insurance.

That’s why we provide you with up to 180 days of cover wherever you are in the world – so you can stop worrying and focus on planning your sessions on the beach!

Other details you might want to know about what we cover:

  • Will I be covered if I train clients online?

Your Public Liability insurance will only cover you during a face-to-face session or an online video session such as skype.

If you provided training schedules for them to follow before your next session and an injury occurred because of this advice, this would also be covered under your Professional Indemnity, but it is limited to £1m.

We will not provide cover if all your training sessions are done completely online where you never interact or see your clients, i.e. not through a skype video.

  • What sports and classes are covered?

The most popular sports, activities and classes in the UK are covered. This includes everything from aerobics, boxercise, and Zumba to buggy fit, friskis, and svettis.

  • What sports and classes are not covered?

Please check our sports we don't cover page. If you can’t find the sport or class on the list, email us at admin@insure4sport.co.uk or call us on 0800 158 5530.

  • Can I be covered for more than one activity?

Yes, we provide free multi-sports cover. All we ask is that you are qualified to teach or instruct all the sports or activities you are doing.

  • I am a newly qualified personal trainer or fitness instructor. Will this affect my insurance premium?

Not at all as long as you hold a qualification recognised by the UK National Governing Body for the Sport.

  • Are there restrictions on where I train?

No – but if you’re running sessions in public spaces, you may need to request permission from the relevant authorities. What is most important is that you have the appropriate qualifications. Beyond that, you are covered to host sessions in the gym, a local park, or at a client’s home.

  • Am I covered to offer nutritional advice?

Yes – as long as the nutritional advice you are giving is part of your fitness instructor qualification.

  • Am I covered for instructing children?

Yes – as long as you have the relevant fitness instructor qualification, we can insure you.
