What does campervan insurance cover?

What's covered

  • Public Liability cover
    Unlimited cover for death or injury caused to a third party. £20m cover for damage caused to someone else’s property. £5m cover for legal costs
  • Theft, accidental damage, fire, and flood cover
  • Equipment and accessories
    Cover for additional items for your motorhome (e.g. awnings, utensils, camping equipment, etc.)

  • New-for-old cover
    Cover applies if your campervan is bought new, less than 2 years old, and has done fewer than 12,000 miles

  • Emergency accommodation cover
    Covers cost of hotel accommodation or replacement vehicle hire if your campervan is stolen, damaged, or uninhabitable and you’re more than 50 miles from home

  • Carrying more than 8 passengers

  • Claims made when renting out your campervan

  • Can’t be primary residence
    Campervan also can’t be slept in for more than 9 months of the year
  • Campervan being used for business

  • Claims where driver does not have a licence or is disqualified

What details do I need when getting a
campervan insurance quote?

If you want to speed up the process of getting a campervan insurance quote, make sure that you have the following details to hand:

  • Driving licence
    • Info on what type of licence you have and how long you’ve had it
  • Contact details
    • Your name, age and address. You will also need the details of any other named drivers you want on your policy
  • Claims history
    • Have you or other named drivers made any previous insurance claims?
  • Your campervan
    • You will need to know the age, model, and make of your campervan. Also the estimated mileage, what fuel it uses, where it’s kept and its current value

  • Do I need campervan insurance?

    • Yes. Insurance is a legal requirement if you own a campervan.

    How do I estimate my mileage?

    • If you drive your campervan regularly, you can simply take the typical number of miles you drive in a week and multiply by 52 to get your annual mileage. If you use your campervan for occasional longer trips, you will have to figure out the distance in miles you will be travelling for each planned trip. Apps like Google Maps can be helpful for figure out the estimated mileage of each journey.

    Can I drive a campervan on my car insurance?

    • You’ll usually need specialist campervan insurance if you drive a campervan. This is because you will use your campervan for sleeping and cooking as well as driving, whereas you only need to drive your car.

    Does my home contents insurance cover items in my campervan?

    • Some items in your campervan may be covered by contents insurance if you have out-of-home cover included in your policy. However, if you have items that are in your campervan full-time, they will not be covered by home contents insurance.

    What’s the difference between a motorhome and a campervan?

    • Campervans are generally small and have very basic facilities. Motorhomes on the other hand have permanent fixtures and clearly defined areas for living and driving.
